A Space for Elijah

Elijah and his family

Elijah is a 12 year old boy with Cerebral Palsy.  He lives in Spencerport, NY,  with his Mother and Brother.  Mary is a single mom and maintains 2 jobs.  Ryan is the older brother, 17 yrs old, a junior in high school.   Elijah's father John has been reconstructing Elijah's room to better meet his needs.

What we are learning about this amazing fella

Elijah has Cortex Visual Impairment (CVI)

                                                                   Along with Cerebral Palsy

Simply described : The eyes are our collectors of information, our brains interpret.  In Elijah's case, what his eyes see is not interpreted by his brain,  he has to be taught how to see.  Elijah has a therapist that works with him, introducing him to images and confirming what he is able to recognize.

What can Elijah see?

Elijah has a unique way of seeing the world

Elijah can see saturated colors best, mostly reds and yellows.  These colors are best seen without distractions or clutter. Solid background allows this to happen.  Black seems to be ideal.  Familiarity with images is very important because it provides connection and meaning to Elijah.  So, what Elijah learns in school should be mirrored in his room at home.  It is necessary to have his room grow with his developmental needs, being this is what stimulates his interests and engages him with his surroundings.  Elijah is drawn to light and movement.  An example would be mylar balloons or fish tanks.

What Is Needed in Elijah's Room

Elijah has equipment and supports he needs throughout the day.  Their placement will be considered
